A Message from the Director
Dear HBC Tennis Members & Guests,
I really enjoyed my first summer at Harbor Bay Club and want to thank all of you for making me feel so welcome. I’m also looking forward to the Fall season.
As you probably know, there are lots of changes and events in the works. I’m particularly pleased about the project in progress on Courts 11-18 and especially the conversion of Court 19. Our installation of four 36’ junior courts on number 19 will provide a unique and fun learning environment for both kids and their parents. It will also set HBC apart as one of the premier facilities for introducing the game. The USTA’s initiative for 10 & Under Tennis is sweeping the country and Harbor Bay Club will play an important role here in the Bay Area.
The hiring of Hein Tu as our new Junior Tennis Coordinator is also a positive step toward growing the entire program. Hein’s relationship with the local tennis community and role with USTA Nor Cal will be a huge asset in building a grass-roots program at HBC. From 10 & Under to High Performance Training, Hein will be heavily involved. He will work to increase our participation in the East Bay Junior League and grow a USTA Jr Team Tennis program next summer. He’ll help direct our Saturday Parent-Child clinics, plus the Summer Junior Camps.
I also don’t want our adult members to think we have forgotten them! The 30 Minute Serve clinics and Stroke of the Week will return in October. Some of the other adult programming on the drawing board for 2011-12 include:
- Tennis & Fitness Combo Clinics with Fitness Director Sara Norgeot and myself
- Cardio Tennis with Hein Tu
- Tennis 101 withTennis Coordinator Andy Tupman
- Nike Adult Tennis Weekend Camps
- Club Championships
Another special treat for our members is coming up at the end of September. The USTA’s Junior Boy’s National Team will spend 3 days training at HBC, in preparation for the Land Rover Napa Tennis Classic, September 23-25. Monday through Wednesday of that week, Sept 19-21, the team will be working out on our courts. This will be an great opportunity to watch some of the nation’s top junior boys in action. The Land Rover event is one of the premier college tournaments, hosted by Cal. The NCAA has allowed the USTA team to participate. Other teams entered are Notre Dame, Tennessee, Tulsa, Vanderbilt and UCLA.
See you on the courts!
Paul
